Teaching Session #58 - Sunday 9th July 2023 6.30pm
The Book of Lamentations
Main speaker - Bernie Pinner
Host for the evening - Graham Wilkins
Bernie writes:
"As we look at our world today and see the devastation experienced in Ukraine, South Sudan and many other places, we have got to ask the question ‘will we as a human race ever learn to live together in peace?’. It seems like the only news worthy of publication must contain the worst man can do to our fellow men.
Everyone likes to be positive, we love a story where the underdog comes out on top. We love to hear good news and for the Christian what better than to relax and enjoy reading our Bible for something which will lift us up out of our situations. What can be more pleasant and reassuring than sitting down with a cup of tea and reading Lamentations!
Lamentations is like a eulogy, something we are familiar with when we attend a funeral, but what is it doing in our scriptures? It is bleak, dismal, full of death and grief, people are grieving and are lost. But they deserved it. God is punishing his treasured people, those He chose to be an example to the other nations. Those He rescued from slavery, guided through the wilderness, protected during battle and settled in the promised land. What had gone wrong? Is this the end for them?
As we have travelled through the Old Testament we have become accustomed with our God coming to their rescue, the question is have Judah gone too far and are now beyond God’s saving power? Is there any hope for our present world if God has turned on His own people?"
As always, can we try to read some of this book before the session, and come with your Bibles and lots and lots of questions!
