Teaching Session #49 - Sunday 12th June 2022 6.30pm
The Gospel of Matthew

Main speaker - David Wilkins
Host for the evening - Bernie Pinner

David writes:
"The gospel of Matthew contains some of Jesus' longest and best known sermons.  Most people (even outside of church) have heard of the sermon on the mount, a piece of theology that influenced people from Martin Luther King to Mahatma Gandhi.  Indeed some go as far as arguing that understanding the sermon on the mount is all you need to live a good life.  Well, that is until you really try out being perfect as your heavenly father is perfect..  But this gospel was aimed first and foremost at Jewish people to convince them that Jesus really was who he claimed to be, the Messiah.  An argument which would outrage the average Jewish reader.  How does Matthew mix in the Old Testament with Jesus teachings to make this point?  And does he quote Old Testament prophecies out of context just to make this point?  Is it cherry-picking?  And if not, why has he chosen them?  On Sunday 12 June, David and Bernie (MC) will unpack the most Jewish of the 4 Gospels."
